OK, I take it all back.... flat water sailing can get 5 stars, as long as there is some chop to play on as well!

Also, in recent diary entires I said that my new board (Mistral Heat) wasn't the fastest out there and was a little reluctant to get onto the plane.... Today it was a speed machine!!

I started off rigging my 5.7m and in the process noticed that my extension was too long.. This explains why the last couple of evening I had felt as though the sail lacked power and acceleration. I'm not one for examining my sail as I rig, I know the settings, so just chuck it all together and get out there... Well, somehow my extension was on a different setting so I'd been sailing with far too much downhaul. I sorted it out today and got out there, but soon realised that the 5.7m was way too big, so came back in and changed down to my 4.5m

Now it was perfect. With the sail set correctly the centre of effort was further forward so the board stayed flatter in the water (I did comment on how the board seemed to ride with its nose in the air). This meant I was straight onto the plane, and with the mastfoot further back in the mast track, the board planed further back onto the tail and was much much faster.... Lovely.

Once again i was maxed out and there wa a perfect speed run along the sand bar. then at either end of the bar I just headed upwind for a 100 yds, then carved into a super fast gybe, before heading back upwind to the bar and once again bearing away and speeding along it at warp speed... It was the sort of speed that you just know is going to REALLY hurt if anything goes wrong. I love it! Then at the Ynyslas end of the estaury there was quite a bit of fetch beyond the sand bank, so some knee high chop was able to develop meaning I could get the board airborne... Once again, it seemed quite nice with a decent bit of pop.

All in all a perfect session before work.
